The STARS Building – Herston, QLD

Dewpoint Group were engaged by BESIX Watpac and Australian Unity on site in January 2018, with the completion in Nov 2020 when this new state-of-the-art 36,000 Sqm building (Surgical, Treatment & Rehabilitation Service) was officially finished. We are extremely proud to have been part of this landmark icon. The outstanding facility & service that it now provides is a testimony to everyone involved in the $405M project.

Herston Quarter is a visionary 5 Hectare health, hospital and aged care development. This was the first stage of the $1.1 Billion master plan which will elevate Brisbane’s international status as a world-leading healthcare and medical research precinct.  The build has employed over 3,500 construction people over the time, contains 7 Operating theatres, 3 new endoscopy rooms and 182 new hospital beds. In 2021 BESIX Watpac’s construction of STARS won 2021 Master Builders Award Qld for Health Facility over $20M.

The building is served by a high efficiency water cooled chiller plant with redundancy should any of the central plant fail or be required to be shut down for maintenance purposes. A unique primary / secondary pumping strategy has been employed to ensure efficient delivery of chilled water to the facility over the wide operating profile associated with a hospital facility. There are 64 AHU’s of various configurations which serve the different departments through the facility and a bespoke heat recovery system was employed from the pre conditioners to provide reheat for dehumidification of the operating theatre spaces in order to reduce the energy associated with dehumidification of these spaces.
